Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: The only time she shows some affection for her son is the end of her debut episode, despite being mean to him most of the time. She explicitly stated she didn't care that her son got eaten, and mistreated Courage through the episode. She gets devoured by the Sand Whale in "The Sand Whale Strikes". And despite not being responsible for the death of the Phantom's husband, she still thinks it was funny he died. During the episode Ma was planning on working with the Phantom to injure her son in order to destroy their marriage. In the "McPhearson Phantom" she gets haunted by the phantom after the phantom found out her great-aunt was the one responsible for killing her husband. Asshole Victim: Like her son, she is a frequent victim of this. Abusive Mom: She and her favored son Horst mistreated Eustace. Occasionally she is the antagonist of a few episodes, especially when it has something to do with her wig-making company. Rather equally a Jerkass to her son as he is to Courage, she insults Eustace at every opportunity and as a contrast to her son, she is nice to Courage. This could explain why Ren is always unlucky and Shirley travels everywhere and prefers being alone.Eustace's mother. They both moved on and experienced their own lives, Shirley becoming an entrepreneur medium and Ren going through many mishaps and unfortunate events while also meeting Stimpy. Ren of course being the skeptic, didn't believe her and she ended up divorcing him. With this curse, she claimed Ren would suffer with misfortune and that he would appear ugly. Ren then decided to fool around with another female dog, Shirley finding out, which set off her anger and prompted her to use her powers against Ren. Ren and Shirley met and fell in love and got married, probably living a good few years together, Shirley being aware but not revealing to Ren that she had powers for fear what could happen. So here is a theory that I propose could tie the two together: 
She is also not above putting curses on people. Shirley meanwhile, based on her demeanor and attitude in her show is a reclusive and bitter lady, not really showing interest in any potential romance and acts disgusted with male figures, Courage being her only exceptional male companion. Its also confirmed his ideal romantic interest would in fact be a chihuahua due to the one episode with the female chihuahua asking him for a cup of protoplasm.
We don't know anything about Shirley's younger years and we only know bits and pieces of Ren's young years(I'm not counting Adult Pool Party becuz that was a hot mess and doesn't really match up with Ren's true origin story.) What we know about Ren is he used to hang with another dog in school "chasing after females" while doing mischief, so we can assume if he was in a possible romantic relationship, he would probably cheat on a girl. (Ren ranges between the ages of 10 to 17 depending on episodes, while Shirley begs at Courage's door "Won't you please help a poor old woman?" in one episode.) Other than both dogs being chihuahuas, they are also seniors, AKA they are elderly. Shirley the Medium is a chihuahua with psychic and conjuring powers from "Courage the Cowardly Dog" while Ren Hoek is a regular anger prone chihuahua from "Ren and Stimpy". Okay, this is more of a fun fan theory and doesn't have any proven evidence, but I figure it would be interesting to piece two of my favorite childhood 90's shows together.
